Audubon House

The grand home that is now known as the Audubon House was built by Captain John Huling Geiger in the 1840s as a residence for his family, who lived there for more than a century. Slated for destruction in 1958, the Geiger mansion was saved by the Mitchell Wolfson Family Foundation, a nonprofit educational organization.

Key West Aquarium

The Aquarium took two years to complete and opened to the public on February 18, 1935. At that time admission was 15 cents for adults and 5 cents for children. The Key West Aquarium was the first aquarium to use an'open air concept'. This allowed for natural sunlight to illuminate the concrete marine displays. Dr. Van Deusen outlined the future of the Aquarium in his speech on its opening day.

Oldest House

In the 1950s Key Wests citizens watched as several of their most valued architectural treasures were lost to neglect or new development. These events galvanized preservationists to organize the nonprofit Old Island Restoration Foundation in 1960 to promote the preservation and restoration of historically significant buildings.

Truman Little White House

Since 1890, history has left its mark on the Truman Little White House. Initially, it served as the naval stations command headquarters during the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II. In 1946 the historic building first served as the winter White House of President Harry S. Truman and a site for the Cold War response by later presidents. Today, the Truman Little White House is a public, living, Key West museum as well as a retreat and place of government business by our nation's leaders.
